Care & Storage Instructions

How do I store my hat?

  • Your hat should not be exposed to the sun and heat for long periods of time. They should not be stored in direct sunlight.
  • Hats with wide brims, especially fedoras, should be placed crown down on a clean surface such as on a table or a shelf, in a hat box, or hung on a wide, flat hook.
  •  If your hat is foldable, it should not be stored while folded

How should I handle my hat?

  • For preservation of the shape, always handle your hat on the brim with clean hands, rather than using the crown to pick your hat up. Too much contact with the crown can cause it to break down, rip, or create a distorted crown.

How should I travel with my hat?

  • When travelling, protect your hat by placing it in a sturdy hat box or get one of our travel cases specifically designed to safely travel with hats.
If this isn’t an option, fill the crown with soft clothing like socks or scarves to help maintain its shape, and carefully pack it in your luggage, making sure the brim is supported and not pressed down by heavier items. For foldable hats, ensure they are only folded temporarily and stored flat as soon as possible to avoid creasing or damage.

How do I clean my hat?

  • To clean your hat, use a soft-bristled brush or a lint roller to remove dust and debris.
  • For deeper cleaning, spot clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent, but always test a small, inconspicuous area first.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or submerging the hat in water, as this can damage the material.

What if my hat gets wet?

  • With our fine British weather, it’s inevitable you will get caught out in the rain. Most hats can withstand a small shower, but it is important to allow your hat to dry out properly and as quickly as possible after getting wet.
  • Never use a hair dryer on your hat as it is likely to make it wrinkle and even shrink.
  • Allow the hat to dry naturally in a well-ventilated area away from a direct heat source.
  • Always try to dry a hat on a stand after gently blotting off the excess water with a towel.
  • With fedoras you can also turn out the sweatband to allow it to dry fully. With proper handling and care, a quality that will remain your favourite for years to come.

General tips:

  • Avoid wearing your hat in heavy rain or damp conditions unless it is specifically designed to be water-resistant.
  • Allow wet hats to air dry naturally away from direct heat sources, reshaping the brim or crown as needed during drying.
  • Periodically inspect your hat for signs of wear or damage and address any issues promptly to extend its lifespan.

Cleaning and drying for all hat types

Wool Felt Hats

  • Oily stains caused by hair products for example, can be removed by gently applying talcum powder.
  • Apply small amounts to the affected area and let it settle for at least two hours then brush away the residue.
  • Dust and soil may be removed with a soft brush.
  • Hats should be dried inside to avoid shrinkage due to exposure to high levels of heat.
  • If your hat is out of shape, it should be reshaped while wet.

Fur Felt Hats

  • For major stains, fur felt hats should be taken to hat cleaning specialists.
  • However, for smaller dust or grime stains, the hat can be treated at home.
  • First, brush the hat in anti-clockwise circles and then lightly rub the affected area with dry cleaning fluid.
  • If your hat has become wet, do not force dry it by applying heat.
  • Place a hat form on the inside to prevent the inside leather band from shrinking.
  • The hat should then be dried indoors.
  • When travelling to wet regions, it is recommended to apply a protectant such as Scotchgard to protect the hat.

Straw Hats

  • Dirt can be removed by using a small brush.
  • To remove a stain, lightly wipe the affected area with a damp warm cloth.
  • Do not saturate the hat with water as straw loses its shape when wet and the shape of the hat may be altered.
  • Dry out of the sun.

Panama Hats

  • If stained, your hat should be spot cleaned.
  • Use a damp cloth dipped in soapy water and pat dry with a separate dry cloth.
  • Strong chemical cleaners should not be used as they can cause colour discolouration.
  • If your hat gets wet, it should be dried as soon as possible to avoid shrinkage.
  • After using a dry cloth to gently wipe off excess water, let the rest of the hat dry naturally indoors in a cool, dry place.
  • Artificial heat should not be applied, as that will also cause shrinkage.

Canvas Hats

  • These hats can be gently hand-washed using a mild detergent.
  • Afterwards, rinse thoroughly in clean water to completely remove the detergent.
  • Hats should be dried indoors, away from high levels of heat and humidity.
  • No artificial heat should be applied.
  • Machine wash is not recommended.

Natural Fabrics (Linen, Cotton, Wool)

  • Fabric hats are easier to maintain compared to hats of other materials.
  • These natural materials may shrink when wet, so for stains they should simply be spot cleaned with a stiff bristle brush and some mild water.
  • Drying should occur indoors in a cool and dry place.
  • No artificial heat should be applied.

Leather

  • When the hat becomes wet, it can be dried naturally, preferably using a hat-form to prevent it from shrinking.
  • Avoid exposure to artificial or extreme heat as this will cause the leather to dry out and become inflexible and stiff.
  • Leather conditioners may also be applied to help the hat maintain its flexibility and waterproof qualities over time. It should not be overused.
